☀️ Happy Monday, UC neighbors!

Summer is just around the corner. This week brings a World Cup kickoff celebration in Berkeley Heights, live music throughout downtown Summit, farmers markets, outdoor adventures, and plenty of reasons to stay out a little later.

We’re also introducing a new feature: The UC Scoop Patio Watchlist, highlighting a few local spots to enjoy dinner, drinks, or brunch outdoors this season.

Grab your calendar. Let’s see what’s happening around Union County this week.

Help name Union County’s falcon chicks

Union County is asking residents to vote on names for two peregrine falcon chicks living atop the courthouse tower in Elizabeth. This is the last week to do it.

Voting is open through June 12, with patriotic name options including Liberty, Patriot, Justice, Glory, America, Independence “Indy,” Valor, and Anthem.

The UC Scoop Patio Watchlist ☀️

Summer dinner season is here, so we’re starting a rotating list of outdoor dining spots around Union County. This week: a few patios to keep in mind for a casual night out, date night, or a relaxing meal outdoors.

Best Easy Downtown Option

Open Quimby
Quimby St., Westfield

Can’t agree on where to eat? Open Quimby is one of the easiest summer setups in the county. Grab takeout from one of the surrounding restaurants, claim a table, and let everyone order what they want. Great for families, groups, and indecisive friends.

Best Date-Night Patio

The Publick House
899 Mountain Ave., Mountainside

Tucked away on the edge of the Watchung Reservation, The Publick House offers a cozy outdoor setting that’s ideal for date night. The historic atmosphere, craft beer selection, and elevated pub fare make it feel like a mini getaway without leaving Union County.

Best Patio for Cocktails

River & Rail Cantina
230 S. Ave. East, Cranford

With margaritas, tacos, and a lively outdoor setup in downtown Cranford, River & Rail is built for summer evenings. It’s an easy choice for happy hour, a casual night out, or meeting friends for drinks on the patio.

Best Neighborhood Patio

Jessica’s Restaurant
250 South Ave., Fanwood

A local favorite for breakfast and lunch, Jessica’s offers a charming outdoor dining area that’s perfect for a leisurely brunch, coffee catch-up, or weekday lunch. It’s the kind of place where you’ll often run into neighbors and linger a little longer than planned.
